A Kirtan is a chant of a line or single short verse that is repeated in call-and-response fashion and builds in tempo or speed (laya) as the chant progresses.
Most kirtan use a number of different 8 beat taal, changing as the tempo (laya) increases. Musical accompaniment is important to kirtan, with drumming providing the vital beat that drives the increasing tempo.
Each kirtan below has a video demonstrating how it is played at various speeds, as well as introducing some of the variations and embellishments played.
Included here are some of the favourite Shanti Mandir kirtan practiced in satsang all over the world. More will be added over time.
Listen and play along to practice and learn.
